To this day, Dehana and Gazgibla mothers are unable to provide for their children. Fathers banned by law from marrying off their 13/14 year-olds haven’t stopped. Those who managed to escape from the wrath of Mother Earth are still making their vows to Debre Weila Mariam Church. For them, Lalibela is a war memorial or a tourist attraction; for us, Lalibela is the shape of our history and the essence of beauty, but for that young girl whose crown has covered over, Lalibela is not but stone. She delivers her prayers to Debre Weila Mariam. She hears the priest complaining, “They spare us not; this year, the termites are burying our Lady.” What does the young girl perceive from a lamenting priest? That escapes uncovering by education or science. A girl. Stuck, she didn’t choose poverty. She submits entirely to the Creator and takes everything as it comes. Her mother named her carefully – Yeshihareg, a thousand vines. Her name is her only hope. Her alien aunt, who has not finished counting the miles between them, pleads, “May God strengthen her back.” Lalibela’s rocks testify to Yeshihareg’s story. As we adorn ourselves with the Lalibela cross, let us strive to give meaning to the life and hope of Yeshihareg, to hold her in our hearts, for not a single life is in vain. If time can save her, she will birth Yeshimaereg, a thousand ranks, as we adorn in the Lalibela jewels, for the light of the Creator will turn tin into gold. Dare to separate the wax from the gold. Let’s not forget. Open all sleeping eyes. # I’m not going to keep quiet #the storyteller from Meskelo
